Patent Examiner Hiring Process Timeline

From the time a job opportunity announcement closes to the time we extend an official offer, this timeline will give you a clear idea of how our hiring process works – and what you can expect at different times. View the timeline chart and read below for more details on the process.

Weeks 1-2

Begins when Job Opportunity Announcement (JOA) closes
on USAJOBS

HR Review and Assessment of Applications for Qualifications

You are encouraged to check the status of your application and view your application history on USAJobs.gov by selecting the “My Account” tab on the USAJOBS.gov home page.

Weeks 3-8

Hiring Officials Review Applications, Conduct Interviews and Make Selections

Check USAJOBS.gov to review your status – “Selected” or
Not Selected.” What does that mean?

Selected”: USPTO determined that you met the minimum qualifications for the position. The selecting official has evaluated your application package and has decided to tentatively select you for the position contingent upon your background investigation.

If you are “SELECTED”:

  • Verbal and written tentative offers are made three days after selections
  • The proposed effective date is four weeks after an offer is made

Not Selected”: USPTO determined that you met the minimum qualifications for the position. The selecting official has evaluated your application package and has decided not to select you for the position.

If you are “NOT SELECTED”:

  • No further consideration will be given for selection from the JOA. You may contact the USPTO Human Resources Office if you have questions.
  • To locate the contact information, go to “My Account and view the job summary in your application history on USAJOBS.gov. The contact information for each JOA is listed on the right hand side in the lower portion of the announcement.

Remember: You are encouraged to check the status of your application and view your application history at any time on USAJOBS.gov by selecting the “My Account” tab on the USAJOBS.gov home page.

Weeks 9-10

HR Extends Job Offers

Still haven’t heard anything back?

USPTO provides notification updates within approximately 15-30 days after the JOA closes. Select “Application Status” from the “My Account” tab on the header of the USAJOBS.gov homepage to view your application status. If the job is closed and you have already applied for the job by clicking the “Apply Online” button, you can locate the JOA in your Application Status list and click on the job title to find the contact information. This will open the entire job announcement.

If this 10-week timeframe has passed and your USAJOBS account does not reflect a final status, please feel free to contact the HR Specialist listed on the Vacancy Announcement. If you have questions about the hiring process, you may call 1-800-786-9757 on business days between 8:30AM-5:00PM EST.
